I use to think the same. And especially with SEO for a new website, when you know almost nothing about SEO or you’re just doing wrong SEO. It gets harder at the beginning.
Before we begin, let me tell you what SEO is, why SEO for a new website is really important and how to rank better on Google?
What is SEO? And why SEO for a new website is really important?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic of your website through organic search engine results. (Said MOZ.com)
Back in 2000, when there were very few blogs or online businesses, and no algorithm. It was quite easy to rank better on Google. But after the algorithm came everything changed.
When you search “SEO for new website” on Google, you’ll quickly see (picture below) what the major problem you’re up against is.
These websites have been up for years and they provide content that everyone is looking for. They dominate the top page rankings for popular industry keywords. These people are producing stellar content and getting countless backlinks to their content. And let me tell you they are going nowhere down in future (or maybe not at this moment).
Rank better on Google is everyone’s dream. But, there’s something you should know, 75% of people will never scroll past the first page of a Google search. That means you can’t afford to be ranking on the second, third or fourth page. You just won’t get the clicks and traffic you need to make SEO worth your time and money.
A good SEO presence has the power to drive inbound traffic that could grow your business for years to come. But an average website owner doesn’t have the power to rank better on Google for the best keywords.
But don’t get disappointed!
Here are good tips and tricks I’m going to show you in this article which will help you rank better on Google without having to learn SEO for new website books or guides (but you can if you want to, and if you want to master SEO then you should). If you follow these tips and tricks from the beginning of your blog journey, it will be much easier after some time. And yea, you’ll see results.

- Shorter page titles and URLs
The page title and URL are two of only a small number of elements that are present for the user to view within the search engine results page. It’s fair to say that they have a huge impact on the click-through rate from the SERPs. Desirable SERP snippets tend to receive much higher click-through rate, thus receiving a ranking boost.
Understanding what makes a SERP snippet ’desirable’ is a huge advantage. For larger websites, especially those within e-commerce leanings, there are huge SEO wins to be had with snippet optimization.[Tweet “High ranking web pages in Google tend to have shorter page titles (8 words is optimal)”]
Shorter titles correlate with higher rankings in Google. This makes a lot of sense to me for two main reasons:
- Longer titles end up being cut off in the search results which means a key part of the phrase could be lost, making it less derivable to the user.
- Shorter titles tend to get to the point quicker and enable the user to very quickly determine if the result will fulfill their initial need.
On top of this, looking into whether the length of the URL had a relationship with Google ranking was quite clear. There’s a similar relationship with short URLs as there is with page titles.
- Longer URLs tend to look a little more spammy within the search engine results page, and this is amplified if there are a lot of numbers and symbols within them.
- If a URL is too long then it misses out on the benefit of having any keywords within it bolded, which will likely draw more attention to the user.
- Long-tail keywords
Long-tail keywords are very effective and they are more than big, popular ones. They might not send you lots of traffic, but they send you more when you add a bunch of them. You should target these long-tail keywords because they’re easier to rank for. And that means they’ll usually take less time and money.
Long-tail keywords are more targeted and less competitive than short-term keywords. If you have just started your SEO campaign for a brand new website, then I would definitely recommend concentrating on long-tail keywords.
Why? The truth is that you can’t have your new website ranked with a single word keyword. Trying to optimize your new blog to rank for “SEO” is hardly possible.
When you look up for an “SEO” keyword on google search you’ll see that most of them are taken by popular blogs, website or Wikipedia.
For example, you can target “basic SEO for new website or how to rank better on Google” in your new SEO campaign. This long tail keyword is less competitive than “SEO”.
Two things to remember are to make the keyword as long as possible and to use Google’s keyword planner to find a relevant keyword for future references.

- Target keyword in the title
Your company may be right up on the Google Search results page with the appropriate keyword, channeling a huge amount of traffic to your website. On the contrary, a misadvised or inappropriate keyword can make your site’s chance towards prominence more remote than ever.
The title of the article defines its content, and as such, a keyword-rich title holds greater weight with Google. In general, the closer the keyword is to the beginning of the title tag, the more weight it has with search engines.
As you can see, most pages that rank for competitive keywords strategically place them at the beginning of their title tags.
- Descriptions should be click-worthy
When you search for something on Google, how do you decide to click on a particular article? First, you look at the title and then you see it’s description. If you’re looking for something and that’s specifically written in the description, you are most probably going to click that website.
Isn’t it true?
Meta descriptions are one of the most important and visible elements – next to your title tag and URL – that persuade people to click through and can help your website rank better on Google.
If you want traffic to your latest article and efficiently on your website, make sure that the meta descriptions are attractive and informative. They should arouse the viewer’s curiosity within the 150-word limit. Pay attention to the meta descriptions, and you will naturally see the results.
- Include keywords in the description
Meta description won’t help you rank but will help you get most clicks if you write catchy descriptions and include keyword into your description.
Search engines sometimes use these snippets in search results to let visitors know what a page is about before they click on it.
Even if the keyword you use in the meta description doesn’t help in search ranking, it still might help in getting searchers attention. Earn someone searches for a particular keyword or phrase, it will be bolded in the search results where ever it appears. So if you are targeting that keyword, you will want it to stand out. In this set of results for the search engine, which results jump out to you?
It goes to show why your top keyword phrase should be in your SEO title and meta description! You wouldn’t want to be the one that had no bolded keywords for that search. So be sure your meta description uses the keywords you are targeting and is written in a way that will encourage searchers to click on that result.
- Put the target keyword in the URL
As keywords are essentially the backbone of on-page SEO, you need to pay a lot of attention to them. There is no reason not to include them in your URLs. The inclusion has its benefits. When you assimilate the targeted keyword into the URL, you are ensuring that Google’s has another reason and way to consider your article as more relevant for a particular phrase.
There’s an added reason why we believe this can be more influential, and that’s the fact that any mentions of a keyword in the URL will be shown in bold, which draws their attention to it more than those not mentioning the keyword.
- Drop keyword in first 100 words
The ideal place to start putting keywords in an article is within the first 100 words. Sometimes these come naturally, but a large number of bloggers prefer a long intro before bothering with a keyword. This is inadvisable because of the obvious reasons that Google wouldn’t find it very relevant in the search results.
Placing a keyword near the beginning of the article ensures that Google has an easier time in understanding the topic and relevance of the article.
- Add keywords in the body of a post
Adding keywords in between paragraphs of your blog post is critical to post’s success and increase traffic of a website. As search engines continually become more refined, it is not enough just to randomly stuff articles with keywords and hope for relevance in the search results.
Strategic placement of keywords is now paramount to your SEO success. Note: Don’t force keywords. Insert them where they make sense.
- Include LSI keywords in your body content
LSI (Latent semantic indexing) keywords are the synonyms and variations of your main keywords which may be in the form of a phrase or word. LSI keywords are part of Google’s algorithm to understand user search habits and give users the best quality content for their search queries.
The question is: How will you find those LSI keywords?
That’s really simple.
Say your main keyword is “SEO for new website.” Go to Google and search for your target keyword and scroll down to the “Searches Related to…” area at the bottom of the page:
- Write more blog posts (include quality content too)
When you use long-tail keywords it’s sometimes hard to stuff them onto the page. You should still focus on one or two keywords per post. That means you’re going to have to create a lot more content.
If you write more content, you’ve got a better shot at ranking on the first page of Google.
The more you write, the more pages get indexed and the more traffic you bring to your site.
Writing 5-10 posts are not enough, you need to create 15+ content every single month. You need to write like your business depends upon it.
- Create long posts
Studies have shown that longer content helps to improve ranking on Google. A target of more than 2000 words should be set in every article. When you check out the top content on Google, its contents on an average over 2000 words.
That means you need to write more in-depth content that guides users through the process of solving their problems. These content should be actionable and filled with images, examples, and step-by-step instructions.
Longer content not only helps in adding more keywords to it, but there is also a natural emphasis on information. The authenticity of a post increases with longer text, which means that Google would recognize it as something more relevant than a shorter and concise text.
As search patterns are synonymous with long tail keywords nowadays, a longer text also improves the chances of your article/website to be on a higher ranking than others.
Additionally, grammar should be impeccable. Articles riddled with errors indicate incompetence and carelessness. The perfect piece is both elaborate and grammatically accurate. (You can use Grammarly to check your grammar & sentences)
- Optimize your image with Alt text
Ensure that the pictures on your website have file names which include the target keyword. Also, your target keyword should be part of your image’s alt text. This will improve optimization for your article and also create a clearer picture for the search engines to the relevancy of your article/page.
Images are an important component of any website as they make pages visually attractive as well as informative. Optimizing your images should naturally boost your ranking. Also, your image will get a high rank in Google image search.
- Submit sitemap XML to Google
Submitting sitemap XML to Google help you increase traffic to your site. It is a tactic that should be employed form the beginning if possible, the earlier the better. The more data you have on indexation the better. But more than just data, the earlier you give the search engines a clear path to your content the better.
But there’s a most common misconception that is the sitemap XML helps get your pages indexed. The first thing: Google does not index your pages just because you asked nicely. Google indexes pages because (a) they found them and crawled them, and (b) they consider them good enough quality to be Wirth indexing. Pointing Google at a page & asking them to index it doesn’t really factor into it.
Let’s get deep into Sitemap XML.
- Internal links
Internal linking is critical for decreasing a website’s bounce rate and optimization as it links to the different pages of a domain together. When link juice is spread, the users/viewers stay on the website longer and the site traffic also increases. It improves the navigational experience for the user.
The bounce rate is measured by how many users visit only one page and then leave the entrance page. Easy and accessible internal linking will naturally decrease this as users will be directed to other relevant articles.
Also, Google bots are designed to emulate user behavioral patterns and evaluate your website. A smart and efficient network of links on the pages helps crawlers find regions which are not frequently visited by the users, thus boosting your site’s ranking.
- Use outbound links
Outbound links are the primary source of bringing more attention to your website. There are a lot of people who make the mistake of not including links to other websites/articles.
Outbound links show Google that the article is both valid and informative and both are vital requisites for ranking. Therefore, make sure that if you aren’t doing so, add outbound links to each of your articles. Just make sure that the links are relevant enough to your content and from authentic and high-quality sources.
- Get more backlinks

Remember it is really important to have a substantial amount of diversity in the domains linking to your web pages.
In fact, web pages ranking #1 had over 168% more linking domains than the web pages ranking at #5.
- Make sure your site is super fast
A slow website is not only bad for the end-user, but also for search engine optimization.
Thus, a slow website can cause your site to rank lower in the search engine results. That translates to fewer page views and less ad revenue (you can also read on how to make money from blog) or customer conversions for you. There is a number of free websites you can check the speed of your website. We recommend using pingdom.com.
If you find your website’s speed is slow (make sure your speed is less than 3.5 sec), then there are a number of ways to optimize a site for better speed.
- If your website is getting larger and larger, that means it includes too many pages, check and remove unwanted pages or upgrade your hosting plan.
- Move to VPS hosting if possible.
- Optimize larger images.
- Remove unnecessary plugins.
- Add the cache plugin, where web pages store data, that will instantly help compress your website and increase speed.

- Your website must be mobile-friendly
More than 75% of people visit your website through mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. It is necessary to make your visits comfortable by making your website mobile-friendly.
This makes it easy to read and easy to use on a smartphone, eliminating any excess effort. Google recommended the fluid responsive design.
Responsive design describes a website that dynamically resizes to fit the width of the device or browser that it is being displayed on. Responsive design uses a single code base that works across hundreds of devices. Naturally, more mobile friendliness equates to more viewers which means more traffic on your site.
- Stay updated with Google’s algorithm
Google updates its search algorithm frequently. For example, on February 23rd, 2016, Google made significant changes to AdWords, removing right-column ads entirely and rolling out 4-ad top blocks on many commercial searches. While this was a paid search update, it had significant implications for CTR for both paid and organic results, especially on competitive keywords.
- Follow Google’s guidelines
There are many ways, not listed here, you can increase your ranking in form of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively and can cause you the penalty.
These guidelines are absolute as Google is the most popular and efficient search engine out there. While you use its services, it’s only prudent to follow the guidelines to the letter.
Conclusion – You’re never done
Additionally, just because you rank well for one keyword or key phrase, does not mean you will rank well for a similar keyword/phrase. And remember that Google is constantly updating their ranking algorithms so today’s rankings may not equal tomorrow’s rankings.
Expect to see your site move up and down in the rankings on a daily or weekly basis – it may even drop from the rankings altogether. This is why SEO should always be ongoing.
