First of all, you need to start in the right direction & with small steps but moving fast. Because everything keeps changing very quickly. Not to worry, I’ll walk you through everything in this guide.
But before that, how to start a blog in this competitive world and make a big difference.

Before you start making money out of your blog you have to remember these things:

Sounds easy, doesn’t it! On some levels the process is simple – but you need to know upfront that there’s a lot to each step and below I’m going to give you some pointers on each including some further reading.

Create a blog.
Obviously, to make money, you need to create a blog. (This guide will help you create a successful blog) Even if you don’t have writing skills or technical knowledge about blogging. Don’t worry! Most bloggers start out feeling a little overwhelmed by the process of starting their blog.
Why you need a self-hosted website?
There are many free blogging platforms but if you seriously want to consider making money from blogging you need to invest in a self-hosted website.
Most free platforms don’t allow monetizing a blog (Advertising and affiliate programs don’t work in free platforms) and have there branding. So having a self-hosted website looks more professional and makes sponsors trust you.
Self-hosting a website is not expensive, it costs around $50 – $250 per year, which is equal to 1-2 Starbucks coffee per month. So it’s actually a lot affordable.

2. Start creating useful content.
If you’re starting a blog, you need a niche to write about. And once you’ve decided your niche you need to focus on creating useful content for you and your visitors.
The key to creating content is to make it as useful as possible. Focus upon creating content that changes people’s lives in the same way that will be the type of content that people will value the most and it will help people to feel like they know, like and trust you – this is important if you want to make money from the blog.

Get your blog to be visible in front of the right audience.
As you keep on creating useful content, you won’t just wait for people to come and visit your blog. If you’re doing so then you’re focusing more and more of your time building your blog. And that’s not it.
If you want to monetize your blog you need to not only focus on building great content but also it is necessary to get off your blog and start promoting it.
There are many ways to experiment on how to increase your blog’s audience. But, again, it is an important strategy you should not just look for traffic but readers. Start by thinking carefully about what your readers are looking for that can help them and they get attached to your content.
Once you know who you’re hoping to have read your blog ask yourself where that type of person might already be gathering online. Begin to list where they might be gathering:
- Are they reading certain blog posts? List the top 3
- Are they participating in certain forums? List the top 3
- Are they listening to podcasts? List the top 3
- Are they engaging on certain social networks? List the top 3
- Which accounts are they following on each of these social networks? List the top 3
Each of these places that your reader might already be gathering has opportunities to develop a presence whether that be by leaving good comments, offering to create guest posts or simply by being helpful and answering questions.
With this list of blogs, focus, podcasts, social media accounts in hand you will have some good spots to begin to hang out and create value.
The key is to build a presence, to add value, to foster relationships – not to engage in spammy practices.
Build engagement around your content.
Once you have a sustainable amount of content and have readers read your blog, you’ll begin to notice that people visiting your blog are engaging with your content. At this point, you need to switch your focus to engaging with those readers and building community.
There are lots of ways to make money from the blog, first, make sure first-time readers of your blog will come back. Only by having returning readers will ever build you a sizable audience that you can profit from.
So how can you stay in touch with your readers?
By building engagement around your content. One way you can build engagement is by asking them for signing up for your blog and constantly sending them updates. By collecting your reader’s email addresses from the very beginning of your blog you will build the biggest mailing list possible.

Start making money from a variety of income streams.
I made around $300,000 in a year of blogging and this is actually the amount not everyone can make but it’s not that hard to attain. My first $100 came from Affiliate marketing and $50 from the advertisement.
For Advertising, you can go for Google Adsense. As Adsense won’t be sufficient, once you reach more than 30,000 views a month you can switch to Mediavine for better pay-per-click.
Further, I’ll guide you guys on how I monetize my blog and earned $294,023. And I will also share what all income sources I used and how much I earned overall. So, you get to have the idea of what you need to do since day one.
But let’s move on and discuss the variety of ways how to monetize your blog.
How much you can make?
That’s the first question people ask me. How much you can make by blogging?
You can make from $0 to $100,000 per month. And how do you make that much?
- A number of visitors to your blog.
The more people visit your blog means more clicks on advertisements, affiliate sales, and exposure, which means more money for you. This is probably the most well-known way that bloggers make money. If your content is interesting, readers will listen to you, read your blog and buy from you.
Sometimes, you are getting 5000 visitors a month, you will still be making in thousand dollars. And if you are getting 50,000 – 100,000 a month, then you can make around $1000 – $20,000 or more.
- The visibility of the ads, affiliate programs, and sponsored posts.
When you put the Advertisement on your blog, you have a choice of the style of advertisements (large images, small images, text, etc.) and also where they are placed. The more prominently the ads are displayed the more likely they are to be clicked.
However, you have to balance placing the ads prominently with the prospect of possibly annoying your readers. We have all visited blogs where it’s difficult to see the content due to the number and size of the ads. This is a delicate balance to achieve and it’s something you will have to experiment with to get the most out of your blog.
This too applies with affiliate marketing and sponsored posts. You need to make sure you are marketing your affiliate links and sponsored posts correctly and to the right audience.
- The topic you are blogging about.
The final factor that affects your blog earning is the topic you are blogging about. This is because advertisers will pay more to be on certain blogs than they will for others.
For example, if your site is about golf, your readers are likely to have a healthy income. Because of this, there are a good number of advertisers that want to get their ads in front of your readers, and they are likely to pay a good amount per click to do this.
Contrast this with a blog about Justin Bieber. The readers of this blog are likely to be teenage girls, who usually don’t have very much purchasing power. Because of this advertisers will likely pay less for each click.
These three factors will determine the amount of money you make. Estimating exactly what you will make is pretty difficult, but a high traffic blog on the right topic has the potential to bring in several thousand dollars every month. Of course, many people earn less than this, and some earn even more. In fact, it has been estimated that some top blogs/websites earn nearly $2 million per year.
Ways I Used To Monetize My blog.
One of the biggest misconceptions that I see bloggers having about monetizing blogs is that they have to do it in one of a handful of ways. The reality is that there are many ways to monetize your blog.
This is one of the most popular among bloggers in terms of making money from the blog. In many ways, this model of making money from blogs is not dissimilar to how a magazine or newspaper sells ads. As your traffic and brand grow you’ll find advertisers will be willing to pay to get exposure to your audience.
While you need decent traffic to do a direct deal with advertisers there are ad networks that act as a middleman and enable smaller publishers to run ads on their blogs. This is where many bloggers start.
You can start monetizing through advertising since the beginning of blogging. Though the best is Google Adsense if you don’t get accepted by Adsense you can go with InfoLinks. InfoLinks is one of the best alternatives of Adsense and you can even make, almost equivalent, like Adsense.
If you have a website that promotes services or products intending to earn money online then you will need to know how to add affiliate links to your website.
Affiliate links are a form of advertising, in which you link to a product that is for sale on another site and if someone follows your link and ends up buying that product you earn a commission on that sale.
Not every service or product offers an affiliate program, but you need to do research in your niche and see which service or product offers you an affiliate program.
For example, if you are writing a post, about a particular amazon product, you can put your special Amazon affiliate link in the post, this link will link to the product page on amazon’s website. If your reader clicks the link and goes on to buy the product you will get a percentage of the sale price, usually between 3% and 10%.
There’s more to it than that but this is another great way on how to monetize your blog. Affiliate programs are easy to sign up for and if you have an engaged audience you will find they follow the recommendations that you make on products.
While not something most bloggers do but we have noticed an increase in the number of bloggers making money by running events.
These range from big conferences to events and small meet-ups for blogger’s readers where the money is Ade either through charging readers to attend or by finding a sponsor for the event. Alternatively, online events or summits are getting more popular.
Sometimes called collaborative posts or brand collaborations, these are another subtle form of advertising where a brand contacts you or you may contact the brand, and ask you to feature their brand in a blog post in return for money.
The brand will usually expect their product to be named, reviewed and features in the photographs/written, and they will normally expect a link to their website as well. But please note, to comply with Google rules these links should always be set to “no follow”. If you fail to do this, you risk being downgraded in Google searches, as Google does not like people buying links.
In the beginning, you need to approach the brands to sponsor your article and you’ll be able to make around $50 – $100 per sponsorship. Once you’ve started, brands will connect you to write a review or article on their product or service. Once you’ve built up audience and traffic around 1000+ per blog post, you can charge between $150 – $1000 or more per article.
Another way of making money that is potentially very lucrative is to create products that you can sell to your readers via your website. This could be an actual physical product. But bloggers usually opt to sell digital products from their websites, such as printables, ebooks, courses, and training.
The other type of product some bloggers sell is physical products. This is most common when the blogger has a business but sometimes bloggers also create merchandise (T-shirts etc) or other physical products to sell.
A common way that many bloggers make money is by offering services to their readers. This could be anything from offering virtual assistant services or social media management, to writing freelance articles for other sites and magazines, through to coaching and consulting services or more niche-specific services, such as offering personal training, legal services or tax advice.
There are of course other forms of income that blogger experiment with. Some include asking for donations, syndicating content to other sites and lastly selling your blogs/websites.
These all are great ways on how to monetize your blog but most full-time bloggers make money more than one way and end up with multiple income sources.
How you choose to monetize your blog depends on your personality, your goals, your niche, and your abilities. There are blogs out there that are making good money via all of these different ways, but my top tip to you would be to try and diversify your revenue stream by aiming to make money in at least 2 or 3 of these ways.
What you need to do is list down all the ways you can monetize your blog. Create a blog and start income from multiple streams. Diversifying your income in this way not only is smart and helps you spread the risk from having all your eggs in one basket but it also speeds up the journey to going full time.
