Before jumping into everything else, take a moment to think, what represents your email marketing goals? What do you indeed want to achieve through email marketing? Who are you targeting? What will you include in your content?

Don’t just think about creating content and sending emails. This will not lead you to success. Develop goals, plan and then execute. An email should be an essential component of every digital marketing plan because of its effectiveness in driving conversions and building brand loyalty.

Your email goals should be taken into consideration with your company’s overall marketing goal and should be measurable. Some examples of email marketing goals:

  • Regularly link content in your email to increase the number of visits each month and revenue.

Fortunately, there are lots of great email marketing software that will make your work a whole lot easier to send out your weekly newsletter. There are many email service providers but the one I’ve used and will highly recommend is ConvertKit.


This is personally my favorite email service provider. The biggest mistake a newbie makes is to start with a FREE Email Service provider. The reason not to go with these free services is:

  • Poor or no customer service.
  • Affiliate links are not allowed, which makes tough to generate income from the email list.

ConvertKit has a lot more bells and whistles. You can accomplish a lot more with it and it was made with bloggers in mind, and it’s unusually good if you want to create automated sales funnel sequences. But you have to pay for it, even if you only have one subscribe, the emails are less pretty and it’s less easy to send out an automatic email based on your blog posts.

  • You will switch to ConvertKit anyway. Starting with them now avoids the messiness of importing your list (and their associated data).
  • You can hide your home address. US law says you need to put an address where you are reachable at the bottom of every email. With ConvertKit, you can use their address.

It’s also perhaps a litter to set up in the beginning. Having said that, I think once you’ve learned how to do it, it’s easier to run in the long run. And you can develop amazing things with automated sequences, landing pages, sales funnels, and content upgrades.

You might be thinking of going and getting thousands of email subscribers either for a relatively small amount of money or even for free. Ya, there are these kinds of people available on the internet.

But don’t do that. Buying email lists is not a good idea. Let me tell you why.

Most of the subscribers are old or fake email addresses, and the few who don’t probably aren’t interested in your services. Along with the possibility of getting flagged as a spammerAlso, nearly 100 percent of the time, you rarely get what you pay for.

  • Welcome email – When someone subscribes to your email list it’s important to introduce yourself or your business. To build a relationship with readers it’s a good idea to talk about what your blog is about, share popular content, give freebies or discounts and tell them to connect with you on social media.

    This will not only nurture your relationship with your subscribers and turn them into potential future customers.  How to create welcome email through ConvertKit:

    • Go to Sequences > New sequence > Create a sequence.
    • Your first email is your welcome email. Change “when to send” to immediately.
    • Say thank you, drop a link of a freebie and let them know you plan on sending them more cool stuff later.


  • Opt-in email – If you are providing high-value content, people would like to visit your blog again and it will be easier for them if they sign up for the email newsletter.

    Simply creating some opt-in freebie to attract readers to sign up to the email list, is the easy way to collect email subscribers.

  1. I think you did a good job laying out some options like MailChimp (which is great for under 2,000 people I think) to semi-automate the outreach process. What email program do you think works well for one-off approaches or under 100 people at a time?

      I would prefer Constant Contact, is the best way to approach subscribers. It gives to wide range of forms to attract new subscribers. But as I have mentioned before, if you have less than 2000 subscribers, go for MailChimp as it requires less work and it’s also free.
