As you know, there’s a lot to be gained by using Instagram itself. Being the second most effective way to increase awareness and brand exposure, it’s hard to avoid it. There’s a lot that can be done by using these social media platforms, to the point where it can be overwhelming when trying to figure out, where to start and what to do.
But the one very important goal that every other Instagram account takes is: Increase Instagram followers. And when you see those huge accounts saying they don’t do much for increasing following, ya that a trap. So here in this article, I’ll walk you through the tricks and strategies you can use to attract an audience (for any kind of business).
The following are Instagram engagement tactics to improve, engage and increase Instagram followers, thereby strengthening your brand’s identity as well as giving you higher ROI.
Before we start with anything, have you optimized your Instagram Profile completely? If not, read How to optimize your Instagram for business before you start marketing your Instagram account.
Follow influencers in your niche.
Find influencers or companies you would like to follow, also have similar tastes or goals as you. When you’re first starting out, you’ll need to choose accounts to follow, so you can take them into consideration. Here are some tips to follow accounts:
- Your partner brands.
- Influencers in your niche.
- Brands you’re inspired by.
- Your competitors.
While doing so, note type of content works for them, so that it will help you find out what you should work on and how to improve. Find out what your competitors are doing, how they market and follow their activities. But remember not to get too much involved because you have to stand out with their weakness.
2. Use infographics, memes, and animated GIFs.
Posts with infographics get 18% more click-throughs and posts with animated GIFs get 167% more click-throughs than with normal images. There are also dozens of tools to help you make your own engaging images and graphics for your social media messages. One of my favorites is Canva, you can create infographics, posters and many more through it. You can also create through Photoshop or Illustrator and even download for free from online.
- Real-life memes of employees having fun.
- GIFs for special offers and events or connected with your content.
- Connect with fans and followers with the emotional and fun GIFs and memes.
GIFs are a great way to showcase your brand’s personality, stay trendy and have fun.
3. Share videos.
While photos are great for engagement, but videos are getting more than double that reach. You don’t have to be a video creator; you just need to upload it. It’s safe to say that sharing videos will help you engage your fans and followers and connect with once your sharing from.
Share videos such as how-to, entertainment, behind-the-scenes, culture, recruiting, response, shout-out, event, promotional, demonstration, interview, and even customer testimonials.
If you want to create your own videos, start with a simple smartphone or go with a camera, microphone, stand and lights. Edit your video with Windows Movie Maker or iMovie, or from professionals. Add captions to make your message accessible for everyone, even if the sound is off. Use your social media message copy to get your followers excited to watch your video.[Tweet “Boost engagement by creating and sharing social videos.”]
4. Use hashtags to double your engagement growth.
Hashtags are a very important part of the marketing tools. It might be silly, but they can help you get more followers much more effectively. Also, there’s a new Hashtag change is coming from Instagram soon in 2019 (and I’ll update you with it). But they are game-changer, if used correctly you can get tons of followers and even rank on specific hashtags.[Tweet “Hashtags are not only a big part of how we use social media but also they’ve even started to become part of how you speak.”]
On Instagram, you’re allowed to put 30 in one. So, try to add relevant hashtags to your niche. Don’t just go with popular once because they are hard to rank on (yes, use long hashtags or small niche hashtags). Find trending hashtags with:
5. Tag relevant accounts.
In order to grow your community, look to the big influencers and see how you can involve them in your Instagram strategy. Not only can you learn from them, but also you can easily share their quotes, products, and other resources within your own posts that align with your business’ narrative.
When you share content from others, make sure your posts are still original. Take your own images, design your own quote graphics and still create something that matches your own business. But remember to give them credit. Tag them in your posts so that they see it, their audience might see it, and then watch your audience grow.
Sharing more than once a day will increase your Instagram followers. The more you share, the more followers you will get. Sharing more often helps you reach and engage more often with your audience. So, how often should you share on Instagram?
The answer is posted 2 per day in a 12-hour break. But don’t spam your followers, they might get irritated and may end up unfollowing you. If you share two posts a day, curate one of them. Most people won’t even read your caption, so make your image attractive and with a message to catch their attention.[Tweet ““Buffer says that major brands share on Instagram on average 1.5 times a day, but not more.””]
7. Post on the most active time .
- Research has shown that the best time to post is between 8-9 AM, avoid posting at 3-4 PM.
- Posting a video on Instagram at 9 PM gets 34% more interactions.
- Post content more during off-work hours than during the workday, aside from peak times.
But there are better times to post on social media for your business. You can find out when your own audience is active from Instagram insights. This will give you a better understanding of your audience and what content is doing well at what time.
It’ll tell you when your current audience is active, location and gender. You can schedule your post or updates using tools like Hootsuite and Buffer, well they are both paid but offer 3 accounts on which you can post for free. So, you can use any 3 accounts to share the post on at the same time.
8. Ask questions.
Use the three kinds of headlines that work best for engaging content: how to, list and question. Ask questions to pique your followers’ curiosity. Close-ended questions actually work best for click-through’, so try questions that make your followers answer “yes” or “no” in response to your question.
Post something controversial that makes your readers question their behavior, beliefs or sense of belonging (not too much that it create hate). They’ll want to confirm or disprove what you share, so they’ll have to click through to learn more.
9. Use stories to increase Instagram followers.
Instagram stories have a slideshow format and are only live for 24-hours (though they can be saved to your device to be re-used later). These are some of the benefits of using Instagram Stories for brands:
- Stories are prominently displayed at the top of follower timelines just under the Instagram logo.
- It can be used to capture behind-the-scenes content that doesn’t have to be as high in quality as regular posts.
- It makes easy to experiment with different content types: photos, short video, boomerang (GIF-like image), video filmed backward (rewind) and Live Video.
- Tagging other accounts .
- Fun additions like face filters .
Now you are able to connect Live Videos and IGTV (the feature is only available to business profiles). It is somewhat like Youtube but it still needs improvement. Though I don’t feature YouTube over IGTV cause, first of all, it has to create vertical videos and second has less feature than YouTube (also you can’t earn from it).
10. Get engaged with your audience.
First of all, congrats! You’ve thoroughly developed your Instagram strategy, created some awesome Instagram posts, recorded your data, and now it’s time to optimize everything for the next level of audience engagement!
At this point, you know what works well and you’re ready to fine-tune everything to achieve your goals faster and better. There are easy steps to optimizing your entire Instagram account from the descriptions and imagery, to tagging others and building a community.
- Write perfect post captions.
- Using hashtags
- Tag industry influencers
- Adding a location
- Optimize your link in your profile.
- Know how often to post.
- Advertise with Instagram.
11. Measure your growth.
Why is it important? I know sometimes it gets hard from where to start and records to keep but we have created a free measuring sheet for Instagram. These records will help you keep focused and see what are your weaknesses so you can improve your strategy and help you increase Instagram followers. Measure your social media engagement:
- Measure the engagement of Individual social messages to understand what your audience likes and act quickly.
- Prove the ROI behind your social media strategy! You’ll easily prove your value to your boss, clients, and team.
- Identify trends without wasting your time deciphering confusing data.
- Know exactly what’s working, and what’s not with all of your data in one convenient place.
12. Be responsive.
Research shows that customer emotions become permanent with time. It’s best for an effective intervention to take place as close to the experience as possible. When people post comments on your social media respond quickly. If you don’t, then it’s going to seem like you’re not very active on your own social media pages – or simply you don’t care.
Both of these will drastically hurt your engagement since hardly anyone will bother posting comments or questions if you’re going to appear to ignore them. And when you do respond, do so thoroughly. You want your answers to be informative and helpful.
13. Use emojis to increase Instagram followers.
Emoticons show a certain element of playfulness that provides your brand with a bit of personality. In fact, statistics show that the use of emoticons will boost the engagement of your posts. Using emoticons will boost the share and comment rate of your posts, and can help increase likes by as much as 57%.
- Smiling faces boost conversions because people feel like the really are talking to a real person.
- Emoticons add human emotions, and it comes across positively with your audience.
- When responding to a negative comment or critique, emoticons soften the blow.
14. Be consistent.
Posting consistently is often tough for overworked content marketers and social media managers. This is essential for engaging, retaining and growing an audience. However, that’s not all it means to be consistent. You can create your social media content a week before and schedule it so you don’t need to worry to post at the same time.
What I do is, there are times when I get too many ideas for content, I create all of them and schedule it pre-determining what will be best for that day (you can also do that through insights about what’s best for that day).
15. Use quotes to Increase Instagram followers.
If you’re looking for the most shareable, engageable and likable content on social media, quotes have been in the top three since 2010. People go to social media to be inspired and share that inspiration with their own network.
Not all businesses will find success with quotes, as some target markets won’t respond particularly well. But if you’re in digital marketing or social media management, you’re missing out if you don’t try a few quote posts from time to time.
16. Share your timelessly amazing content.
Creating, sharing and repurposing evergreen content helps increase content’s result by 283%. Evergreen content is perfect for engaging your social media following because you’ll have relevant content to mix into your posting schedule that’s always relevant.
You likely have timeless content that continues to perform well week after week, month after month. That top content is the kind of evergreen content to share again.
17. Reach out to new and interesting people .
Social media is about well-being, that seems weird. Social media is about connecting with others. Don’t try to place sales first and conversation second.
The solution here is simple: talk to people, respond to their comments & DMs.
Whatever you do, don’t just talk about yourself, talk to them, what they do or something interesting related to them. You don’t have to wait for someone to talk to you first. Go out there and strike up a conversation.
18. Follow your competitor’s accounts and steal their followers.
One of the most interesting aspects of how to steal your competitor’s followers is approaching their neglected fans. By going through your competitor’s Instagram account, you can analyze their trends, habits and posting schedules. The more accounts you’re following, the more opportunity you have to make connections with others. Stay within reason and follow accounts you genuinely find interesting, you’ll attract more and similar followers.
Social media content curation presents an awesome opportunity to tag the authors behind the pieces you’re sharing. This recognizes the talent you thought worthy enough to share with your followers while giving your audience the chance to discover even more engaging content.
19. Offer giveaways or conduct contests.
Social media contests help boost engagement and increase Instagram followers in a number of ways. Encouraging people to participate in a contest that is related to your brand will boost engagement with those who are already following and help you increase followers by those that don’t follow you yet to do so in order to participate.
Instagram is a great platform for contests.
- People are motivated by free giveaways. One of the best ways to ensure more likes follows or emails are to host a social media contest.
- Be clear about your objectives and exactly how you want your audience to participate in the best outcome. Define easy, simple rules before you launch your contest.
- For voting, let your audience be the judge. This could be as easy as favorites or likes. By letting your audience, vote you are encouraging social media engagement and more participation past just alike.
Okay, you’ve been hit with a lot of data there. But they all are easy to do and super valuable to help you increase Instagram followers.
It doesn’t matter if you’re starting from scratch, or trying to increase your six-figure audience base, include all these data in your Instagram Marketing strategy:
- Reach more people.
- Convert more people to your content or site.
- Increase Instagram followers and likes.
- Increase Sales and revenue.
Now, the question is, which one are you going to start with to get more followers?
